Long-Term Athlete Development Seminar – how kids become talented adult athletes

Saturday, November 5, 11:00-1:00
Long-Term Athlete Development Seminar – how kids become talented adult athletes

Inglewood East Clubhouse, 7301 NE 175th St, Kenmore. Please park on 175th St. and walk through the mobile home park, keep to the right, to the clubhouse. Coordinates 47.755106 by 122.244086.
Cascade Canoe & Kayak Racing Team is pleased to announce our 2016 – 2017 athlete, parent, and coach education program. Each session addresses a key aspect of athlete development and is designed to help athletes understand how to draw upon the information to improve their race performance, parents how to better understand how to support the efforts of their child/athlete, and coaches to understand the lessons athletes need to learn and how to help athletes use the lessons to enhance performance.
The first 7 sessions are theory focused and each includes a PowerPoint presentation and discussion. The last 5 are practical – on the water or in the weight room, with participants actively learning and practicing the skills. It is strongly recommended that participants attend the theory sessions before the practical.
The first session is on Long-Term Athlete Development and addresses the question, “How does a child become great athlete and perhaps an Olympic Champion.” This presentation applies to all sports, and uses canoe/kayak as an example.
Presentations are conducted by Dan Henderson, Head Coach of the Cascade Canoe & Kayak Racing Team and 2016 USA Paracanoe Team Assistant Coach. Dan has completed graduate level course work and research in exercise science with athletes reaching the Olympic Games and Olympic Hopes Regatta podium.
For athletes, parents and coaches who are part of our program, the session are free. For everyone else, they are $35 per session, $200 for the seven theory sessions, or $350 for all twelve. All members of the community are welcome!

Cascade Canoe & Kayak Distance Race this Saturday, October 29, 2016

You’re invited!

You are invited to the Cascade Canoe &Kayak Distance Race–a 2km, 5 km or 10 km race primarily for International Canoe Federation sprint canoes and kayaks. Other types of paddled craft may be included. The annual date is the last Saturday in October which this year falls on October 29!

Costumes are welcome!

The annual date is the last Saturday in October–this year October 29! The course brings beautiful fall colors feel free to bring your own color as well with your Halloween costume, although that is not a requirement to compete.

The courses

Three distances are offered and all are available to all age groups. All races are run simultaneously, so you must chose! The Sammamish River is normally a slow meandering waterway that connects Lake Sammamish to Lake Washington. It is often called the Sammamish Slough and averages about 30 meters wide and 3 meters deep. The  course is very protected and sheltered from wind and waves.

As with any “natural” waterway, there are a few small and easily avoided hazards. As the river meanders along, the inside of turns tend to be shallow. There’s also a few places where side creeks enter the river, resulting in small shallow deltas. In a couple of places trees have fallen into the river and stick out from the shore. There are many bridges crossing the river and some have supports in the water. When we have strong sustained rains, the river rises and current becomes stronger.

Cascade Finishes Strong

Oklahoma City – USA Canoe/Kayak National Championships, Day 4

We raced just two events today to wrap up the 2016 USA Canoe/Kayak National Championships. Cascade’s Andreea Ghizila raced the C-1 Women Under 16 200 meters and placed second to Seattle’s Nevin Harrison with a time of 00:54.44 – just two tenths behind. Cascade’s last race of the day was C-1 Men Masters Over 60, where Dan Henderson won in a time of 1:06.88, 44 seconds ahead of San Diego rival Bob Hahn.
The day was topped off at the evening awards banquet, where Ghizila was named to the Olympic Hopes Regatta Team. She will join the top thirty, up and coming USA Team athletes to compete in this World Championships for 15, 16 and 17year olds, to be held in Szeged, Hungary in September.
“We’re very excited that Andreea was selected to the Olympic Hopes team. The Szeged race course is one of the best in the world, where she get her first exposure to international racing,” commented Cascade Head Coach, Dan Henderson. Cascade was also recognized as the 10th ranked club in the United States.
